Garage Door Opener Not Working? Troubleshooting Guide
Before you call for opener repair, run through this checklist — half of all 'dead opener' calls turn out to be something simple.
Start With the Basics
Check the outlet — plug a phone charger into it. Check the circuit breaker. If the opener has a battery backup, it may be beeping for a dead battery. Make sure the emergency release cord wasn't pulled (if the trolley is disengaged, the motor runs but the door stays put).
Remote vs. Wall Button
If the wall button works but the remote doesn't: replace the remote battery first, then reprogram it (check your manual — most take 30 seconds). If neither works, the problem is the opener itself or its power supply.
Sensors and Safety Reverse
Door starts down then goes back up? Your safety sensors are misaligned or blocked — the #1 cause. Both sensor LEDs should be solid (not blinking). Wipe the lenses, realign them so they face each other, and check for spiderwebs.
When It's Actually Broken
Grinding gears, a humming motor with no movement, or a unit over 12–15 years old usually means internal failure. Modern openers are quieter, safer, and come with battery backup and smartphone control. We install them same-day across Broward County — (954) 673-1101.
