Garage Door Won't Open? Here's What to Check First
Few things are more frustrating than a garage door that won't budge — especially when your car is inside. Work through these checks in order before calling for help.
Check Power and Controls
If nothing happens when you press the button: check the opener's outlet, the circuit breaker, and the remote battery. Try the wall button — if it works but the remote doesn't, it's a remote or signal issue, not the door.
Look for a Broken Spring
A door with a broken torsion spring will feel extremely heavy (or won't lift at all) and you may see a visible gap in the spring above the door. Do NOT force it — the opener isn't designed to lift a dead-weight door and you'll burn out the motor.
Check the Tracks and Rollers
Look for bent track sections, rollers that popped out, or debris blocking the path. A door that's crooked in the tracks will bind. Don't try to force a jammed door back into alignment yourself — misaligned tracks under spring tension are dangerous.
Emergency Release and Manual Operation
Pull the red emergency release cord to disconnect the opener, then try lifting the door by hand. If it moves smoothly and stays halfway open on its own, the door is fine and the problem is the opener. If it's heavy, stuck, or slams down — stop and call a pro.
