Hurricane Season: Is Your Garage Door Ready?
In a hurricane, the garage door is often the first thing to fail — and once it goes, wind pressure can lift the roof off. Here's what every Broward County homeowner should know before storm season.
Why Garage Doors Fail in Hurricanes
Standard garage doors are basically big sails. Without wind-load reinforcement, positive and negative wind pressure flexes the panels until tracks bend or the door blows inward. Once the garage is breached, internal pressure builds and the roof becomes vulnerable.
How to Check Your Door
Look for a wind-load rating sticker on the inside of the door (usually on the bottom section). Check that all track brackets are firmly anchored — Florida code requires reinforced mounting. If your door predates current wind codes or has no rating label, assume it's not rated.
Your Options
Hurricane-rated replacement doors meet Florida Building Code wind requirements and are the real solution. Retrofit bracing kits exist but are a compromise. We install wind-load rated doors across Broward County — call (954) 673-1101 for an assessment before the next storm.
