Torsion vs. Extension Springs: What's on Your Garage Door?
Not all garage door springs are equal. Knowing which type you have helps you understand the repair quote — and why we recommend what we recommend.
Torsion Springs
Mounted on a metal shaft directly above the door. They twist to store energy — smoother, more controlled, and contained on the shaft if they break. The modern standard: rated for 15,000–30,000+ cycles (7–15 years of normal use).
Extension Springs
Run along both sides of the horizontal tracks and stretch to lift the door. Common on older and lighter doors. Cheaper upfront but wear faster (around 10,000 cycles), stretch unevenly, and can become projectiles when they snap without safety cables.
Our Recommendation
When we replace springs, we install high-cycle torsion springs rated for 25,000+ cycles — they outlast standard springs by years and run noticeably smoother. If your door still has extension springs, ask us about converting: it's the single best upgrade for an older door. Call (954) 673-1101 for a quote.
